Every American (and I do mean EVERY) should make a road trip from coast to coast, or at least from the Midwest to the West Coast and Midwest to the East Coast (for those of us stranded in the middle). It is just not possible to appreciate what this country is like until you have driven it, mile by mile, and seen all of the great parks on the way.

I love all of these and have done some. The most recent road trip is usually the best one for me. We drove southerly from Kansas City to Seattle when we moved with one of our cars and made the same trip a month later with the other car over the northerly route. Both were breath-takingly beautiful with the edge maybe to the Southerly.

I agree with Sue Weber--many of these are not "road trips." I'm astonished that the ultimate American road trip hasn't been mentioned: Route 66, from Chicago to LA. THAT is a road trip.

See the Great Smoky Mountains National Park( The most visited National Park in the US), and the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina. This area is very accessible to most folks in the Eastern US.

I have been to all but one of the places listed. I loved them all. I have traveled far and near and I have a very hard time saying what I like best. It is all beautiful. Just returned from Vietnam. It was extremely interesting.

While these are all great domestic travel suggestions, the question was what are good places to go for a road trip. Only about half of the places on this list are good road trip locations. That being said, my favorite road trip is the California coastline.

The two most beautiful cities in the US in my opinion are Naples, Florida And Washington DC. Naples is semi-tropical ; lush plantings, beautiful residences and beaches, a first-class symphony orchestra. In Washington, the government area is beautiful, the monuments are heart throbbing-tear jerking, the Smithsonian is unbelievable!. No American should miss seeing the city at least once.

I like most of the places named so far, but the place I keep going back to is Sanibel Island, in the Gulf of Mexico near Fort Myers, FL. What makes it so nice is that the natives have kept it from being spoiled by developers. 2/3 of the island is nature preserves. The tallest buliding is three stories. There are biking paths everywhere. It's a bit of paradise.
