"A British company is aiming to make international cellphone ownership a cheaper and more convenient option than rental for over 80% of US cellphone users whose phones will not work in the UK or Europe.
According to Mobal Communications, many US travelers to the UK and Europe organize and pay for cellphone rental on every trip because their phones use incompatible technology. But with the use of its Mobal service, priced from only US$49 for handset and connection - and no monthly or annual fees - US travelers can now afford to buy a second phone just for international use.
Once connected to the service, customers are only ever charged for their calls. The phone remains active without incurring monthly charges once the user is back in the US, and can be put away until its ready to be used on the next trip. This is far cheaper and more convenient than arranging rental for every trip claims the company.
The Mobal service uses global system for mobile communication (GSM) technology - the most widely used cellphone technology in the world. This means that as well as working in the UK, the Mobal service operates in over 140 other countries, with just one cellphone number.
Phones are delivered free of charge in the US.
