In your home, you can connect up to 10 of your devices to it, just like a traditional WiFi hotspot. Your device charges via USB, and will last for 10-12 hours of continuous use when not connected to power.

Your high speed data allowance will be reset on the 1st of each month. What does "unlocked" mean?
If your device is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM from any network. If your device is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your device must be "unlocked" to work with a Mobal eSIM.
How do you know if your phone is unlocked?
If you purchased your device as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" device from a retailer such as Amazon, then your device is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our eSIM. If you purchased your device directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your device is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our eSIM. If you're still not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your device from.

If your device is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.

Instead, your eSIM activation access code will be sent to your local post office. Japan Post will leave a delivery notice at your address with details of the post office holding your access code and the options available to receive it.
You can then choose one of the following options:

Billing
For your first month of service, your monthly Plan fees will be pro-rated. For example, if you activate your eSIM/SIM on July 16th, you will be billed half of your regular monthly bill for the period from July 16th until July 31st. On August 1st, you will be billed in advance for the month of August. Going forward, you will be billed on the 1st of every calendar month until you choose to cancel your service.
Any chargeable calls and texts will also be billed to you on the 1st of the month.

Unfortunately, we're not currently able to accept cash as a payment method. You can pay for Mobal services using Credit/Debit card, or PayPal.
If you are under 18, you cannot order a Voice SIM or eSIM. Japanese Voice SIMs and eSIMs with a phone number are only available to customers aged 18 or over. However, a parent or guardian who is 18 or older may place the order in their own name. The person who places the order must also be the one to receive it, since their ID must match the name on the order. They will be the account holder and responsible for all charges.
Mobal's SIM and eSIM services use the Softbank and Docomo network. These have been found by OpenSignal, a global independent provider of network coverage information, to each cover over 99% of Japan's population. If you want to check whether your chosen Mobal service has coverage in your area of Japan, you can check out Softbank and Docomo's own coverage maps to make sure.
All usage charges are fully itemized in your online account, so you always know exactly what you are paying for. Your log-in information will be emailed to you when you activate your service.

Mobal eSIMs work in any unlocked phone that supports eSIM, 4G/LTE Band 1 (2100MHz), and VoLTE (for calls).

That means that any Android smartphone or Apple iPhone that is compatible with eSIMs can use a Mobal Japan eSIM, including USA iPhone 14s and 15s which are eSIM-only.

What does "unlocked" mean?
If your device is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM from any network. If your device is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your device must be "unlocked" to work with a Mobal eSIM.
How do you know if your phone is unlocked?
If you purchased your device as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" device from a retailer such as Amazon, then your device is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our eSIM. If you purchased your device directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your device is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our eSIM. If you're still not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your device from.
My device is locked. What can I do?
If your device is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.
Data is fast, free and unlimited, you'll get 1GB, 5GB, 10GB, 15GB, 30GB or 50GB of data per month.
If you use up your entire monthly plan allowance, your data speed will be reduced to a maximum of 200 Kbps. These reduced speeds may not be sufficient for streaming music or video, but they will still allow activities such as web browsing, emailing, posting to social media, Whatsapp messaging, etc.
Your high-speed data allowance resets on the 1st of each month. If you don't use your full allowance, any remaining data will roll over to the following month, but only from the previous month's allowance.
Yes! Voicemail is available as an optional add-on with our Voice+Data 5G SIM. Voicemail is designed for use in Japan and can be retrieved while you're in Japan. If you travel outside Japan, you may wish to disable voicemail as additional charges can apply if callers leave you a message while you're roaming.
Yes, the Japan Voice + Data eSIM service supports SMS text messages.
Note, as with all SMS services, your messages can be delayed, corrupted or on occasion, fail to send. If your message is urgent, we would always recommend that you place a phone call rather than sending a text message.
Yes! You can collect your eSIM access code from our convenient collection points at airports and cities around Japan - completely free of charge. Simply choose your pick-up point when you add your product to the shopping cart.
Voice & SMS roaming is available - you can opt into this when you activate. There is a small additional charge for this service, and calls plus outgoing SMS messages will be billed at our roaming rates.
Some of our services support tethering/hotspot use, however, we cannot guarantee that this feature will work with all devices/operating systems.

Yes! Using VoIP services for calling and instant messaging can be a great way to keep in touch rather than paying extra for traditional voice calls & texts.
It is a requirement of Japanese law that we must collect ID from users of Japan Voice eSIMs to prevent fraudulent usage. If you are picking up your eSIM Access Code in Japan, you can simply show your passport when you collect. You must present your full valid current passport, not a copy or scan.

To make/receive voice calls, Android phones must support VoLTE (Voice over LTE):
Voice calling over the Docomo network is only available on phones that support VoLTE and with Android 12 or newer installed. Please check your phone to find out if it's compatible.
iPhone Users:
Some newer smartphones, including USA-spec iPhones 14 and newer and Japanese-spec iPhone 17, do not support physical SIM cards. If your phone is eSIM-only, you'll need a Japan eSIM to use our service.
Most other iPhones, including non-USA iPhone 14 and newer models and older Japanese models, still support physical SIM cards and will work fine.

What does "unlocked" mean?
If your phone is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM card from any network. If your phone is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your phone must be "unlocked" to work with a Mobal SIM.
How do you know if your phone is unlocked?
If you purchased your phone as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" phone from a retailer such as Amazon, then your phone is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our SIM card. If you purchased your phone directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your phone is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our SIM card. If you're still not sure whether or not your phone is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your phone from.
My phone is locked. What can I do?
If your phone is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.

If you use up your entire data allocation, you'll get reduced speeds (around 200 Kbps). However, your data is always on - it never stops. Your monthly allocation is reset on the 1st of every month, and you can change to a different plan on the 1st of the month in your online account.
If you don't use your full data allowance in a month, any leftover data will roll over to the following month - but only from the previous month's allowance.

Useful Tip - For the international numbers you call often, make a second entry in your contacts list with the number saved in Prefix 0063 format. - No data roaming is provided, so you will not be able to use any data included in your plan while abroad.
Billing
For your first month of service, your monthly Plan fees will be pro-rated. For example, if you activate your SIM Card on July 16th, you will be billed half of your regular monthly bill for the period from July 16th until July 31st. On August 1st, you will be invoiced in advance for the month of August. Going forward, you will be invoiced on the 1st of every calendar month and billed on the 8th until you choose to cancel your service.
Any chargeable calls and texts will also be invoiced to you on the 1st of the month and billed on the 8th.
You can view fully itemized statements detailing all of your charges in your online account - so you always know exactly what you are paying for!

If you've ordered a Japan Voice+Data SIM Card, your phone number will be assigned once your SIM Card has been activated. Once assigned we will send you an email containing your phone number as well as displaying it in your online Mobal MyAccount.
Unfortunately, existing Japanese phone numbers cannot be ported in.
All usage charges are fully itemized in your online account, so you always know exactly what you are paying for. Your log-in information will be emailed to you when you activate your service.
All of your charges are billed in Japanese Yen (JPY).
You can use the Japan Voice+Data SIM Card in any unlocked phone that takes a physical SIM card and supports the 4G Band 1 (2100MHz) frequency.
iPhone 14 & 15 devices purchased in the USA don't accept physical SIM cards, so you'll need a Japan eSIM to use our service. All other iPhone models will work fine, as well as iPhone 14 & 15 devices that are bought outside the USA.
What does "unlocked" mean?
If your device is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM card from any network. If your device is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your device must be "unlocked" to work with the Japan Voice+Data SIM Card.
How do you know if your phone is unlocked?
If you purchased your device as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" device from a retailer such as Amazon, then your device is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our SIM card. If you purchased your device directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your device is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our SIM card. If you're still not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your device from.
My device is locked. What can I do?
If your device is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.
What Size Is the SIM Card?
Our SIM Card is multi-size to fit any device (Nano / Micro / Standard) - no need to worry about which SIM Card size you need.
Unfortunately, we're not currently able to accept cash as a payment method. You can pay for Mobal services using Credit/Debit card, or PayPal.
If you are under 18, you cannot order a Voice SIM or eSIM. Japanese Voice SIMs and eSIMs with a phone number are only available to customers aged 18 or over. However, a parent or guardian who is 18 or older may place the order in their own name. The person who places the order must also be the one to receive it, since their ID must match the name on the order. They will be the account holder and responsible for all charges.
Mobal's SIM and eSIM services use the Docomo network. These have been found by OpenSignal, a global independent provider of network coverage information, to cover over 99% of Japan's population. If you want to check whether your chosen Mobal service has coverage in your area of Japan, you can check out Docomo's own coverage maps to make sure.
Data is fast, free and and unlimited, you'll get 1GB, 5GB, 10GB or 30GB
of fast 5G data per month.
If you use up your entire monthly plan allowance, your data speed will
be reduced to a maximum of 200 Kbps. These reduced speeds may not be
sufficient for streaming music or video, but they will still allow
activities such as web browsing, emailing, posting to social media,
Whatsapp messaging, etc.
Your high speed data allowance will be reset on the 1st of each month.
Yes! Voicemail is available as an optional add-on with our Voice+Data 5G SIM. Voicemail is designed for use in Japan and can be retrieved while you're in Japan. If you travel outside Japan, you may wish to disable voicemail as additional charges can apply if callers leave you a message while you're roaming.
Yes, the Japan Voice + Data SIM Card service supports SMS text messages.
Note, as with all SMS services, your messages can be delayed, corrupted or on occasion, fail to send. If your message is urgent, we would always recommend that you place a phone call rather than sending a text message.
Voice & SMS roaming is available - you can opt into this when you activate. There is a small additional charge for this service, and calls plus outgoing SMS messages will be billed at our roaming rates.
Some of our services support tethering/hotspot use, however, we cannot guarantee that this feature will work with all devices/operating systems.

Yes! Using VoIP services for calling and instant messaging can be a great way to keep in touch rather than paying extra for traditional voice calls & texts.
It is a requirement of Japanese law that we must collect ID from users of Japan Voice SIM Cards to prevent fraudulent usage. If you choose collection/pick up, you would need to present your full valid current passport to the collection point agent. You cannot use a copy or scan.
