Is my handset compatible?

Is my handset compatible with the World SIM?

The Mobal International SIM card will work in all "unlocked" GSM cell phones including iPhones. You just need to check that your GSM cell phone works on the correct frequencies for the countries you are visiting.

When you pick a country from the list, you will see the GSM frequencies needed for that country appear underneath.

If you are unsure whether your cell phone is unlocked or what frequencies it works on, we recommend you contact your cell phone provider first to check.

What does "unlocked" mean?

If your device is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM card from any network. If your device is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your device must be "unlocked" to work with the Mobal World SIM.

How do you know if your phone is unlocked?

If you purchased your device as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" device from a retailer such as Amazon, then your device is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our SIM card. If you purchased your device directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your device is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our SIM card.

If you're not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, there is an easy way to find out... If you have a friend or a family member with a SIM card from a different carrier (for example, if your phone is from T-Mobile and you have a friend with an AT&T SIM card), simply try their SIM in your phone. If you can successfully connect to a network and you don't get any error messages on the screen, then your device is unlocked. If you get an error message on the screen and/or you can't connect to a network, then your device is probably locked.

If you're still not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, simply contact the store where your purchased your device from.

My device is locked. What can I do?

If your device is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.

If your provider cannot/will not unlock your device for you; or if you decide it is too much hassle to get your device unlocked, simply purchase a SIM+Phone package from us.

We pre-install the SIM in our SIM+Phone Packages for you - so your phone is ready to use when you receive it! Simply click here for our SIM+Phone Package options.

Customer Testimonial

"We and another couple were in Budapest trying to find a hotel at night. When you read English, French, German and Spanish, you find Hungarian bears little resemblance! My wife handed the phone to her friend who stayed on the line with the hotel.

The desk clerk talked us through the darkened streets until we drove into a bright, wonderful courtyard where the hotel was located. Mobal was worth its weight in gold!"

How You Are Billed for Any Usage

You order your Mobal® World SIM Card by credit card securely online or through our call center. Purchase and shipping costs (if any) are taken at the point when your order is confirmed.

You then use your Mobal® World SIM Card and the charges for the calls are taken from your credit card as and when we receive the call data from the networks. (These charges will be applied to the same credit card that you use to purchase your phone. You can change the card later using your online "my account" service).

When you finish using your Mobal® World SIM Card, and all your outstanding calls have been billed, you will have no other charges, until you need to use your Mobal® World SIM Card again on your next trip.

You'll be able to review your account and statements at anytime using your online Mobal® My Account login, which will be issued to you after you've purchased your new Mobal® World SIM Card.

Charges and Billing

Are there any extra or hidden charges?

No. The charges quoted on this website are the exact rates you will see on your invoice.

Are there any activation, deactivation or set up fees?

No. The only charges you’ll pay with Mobal are your purchase costs, and then any usage at the rate quoted on this page.

Why don't you have FREE incoming calls?

You may notice that most international cell providers offer customers FREE incoming calls in a number of countries. What they don't explain is that they charge the person dialing you a premium to cover the costs of giving you the FREE incoming call. Your international number is usually a premium number so the caller is charged a higher rate to call this premium number.

At Mobal® we believe in giving you the best possible value from your international cell service and that includes friends and family calling you as we realise it's important for them to be able to reach you at an affordable rate.

That's why your Mobal® World SIM Card comes with a US number so that your friends and family can call you on. It doesn't affect how your phone works, it just gives friends and family an affordable option for calling you while traveling.

How am I billed for my usage?

You will be billed for the cost of the SIM and shipping (if any) immediately when you order. When you're using your Mobal® World SIM Card, your charges for the calls are taken from your credit card as and when we receive the call data from the networks. (These charges will be applied to the same credit card that you use to purchase your SIM Card. You can change the card later using your online "my account" service).

Charges from Mobal will always appear on your card with the reference; "Mobal 212 785 5800". This is our company name and the main customer service phone number so you can contact us via phone for any general queries you may have.

How do I see my bills?

Once you’ve purchased, you’ll be sent login details for your online account. This means you can check your account 24/7 from anywhere in the world.

What currency am I billed in?

You will be billed in USD.

Using my International SIM Card

What do I do when my SIM Card arrives?

  • Power off your device
  • Replace your old SIM with your Mobal SIM Card
  • Turn your phone on, and wait to see a network connection

To access data with Mobal SIM Card there are 2 important things you'll need to do:

1.) Turn ON Data Roaming, and
2.) Change the Access Point Name (APN) to 'openroamer.com'

Setting up my device:

iPhone

Go to Settings >General > Cellular > turn ON Data Roaming > scroll down to Cellular Data Network > APN

iPad

Go to Settings >General > Cellular > turn ON Data Roaming > scroll down to Cellular Data Network > APN

Android

Settings > Wireless & Network > Mobile Network > Access Point Names > New APN

Here you can add a new APN, the name can be whatever you like (we recommend 'Mobal', so long as the APN is 'openroamer.com'

Is there a voicemail service with the World SIM?

Yes, the World SIM voicemail service is pre-activated, however you are welcome to contact us at anytime to deactivate.

How can I set my BillShockSafe usage limit?

We understand that Bill Shock is different for everyone. That’s why you can set your BillShockSafe limit anywhere from $1 to $1,000 – whatever is the right level for you. Your service will stop automatically when you reach your limit so that you can never spend more than you want to. Your usage limit is your total US Dollar spend on calls, text messages and Cellular Data. Your monthly usage limit will reset at the start of each calendar month so that you can keep using your phone as you travel without the need to notify us.

Simply email us and let us know your maximum monthly usage limit and we’ll reply to confirm that this is set up for you. You can increase or decrease your monthly usage limit at any time – simply email us to let us know.

Customer Testimonial

We use the Mobal service so that our family members can have a cell phone that works when they’re overseas. Our daughter has taken it to New Zealand and Saint Martin; our son to South Africa; my wife to Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

In three years, we have had no issues whatsoever, and highly recommend it. I’m fortunate to have worldwide service with my company-supplied smartphone, but Mobal’s phone is a real asset to the rest of our gang. Mark Kuhn

Cellular Data

Unlike calls, which are billed by their duration, cellular data is charged by the amount of data that is transferred over the cellular network, both to and from your phone/device. This data is charged to you in units of 1 kiloByte (kB). There are 1,024 kB in a MegaByte (MB).

As a very rough guide, the following table should give you some idea of the amount of data that may be transferred in the process of performing certain data-consuming activities. These are estimates only; actual amounts of data used may vary significantly.

Sending or receiving a text-only email

10 kB

Sending or receiving an email with an attachment (photo/Word/Excel/PowerPoint, etc.)

500 kB

Browsing a typical page on the Internet

400 kB

Streaming 1 minute of music

1 MB

Streaming 1 minute of video

2 MB

Downloading or uploading a social media post with a photo (to Facebook, etc)

350 kB

Making or receiving a 1-minute Voice over IP (VoIP) call (on Skype, for example)

500 kB

Please note:

All cellular data usage is chargeable. This includes, but is strictly not limited to, Web browsing, sending and receiving email, updating or viewing social media (such as Facebook/Twitter), watching videos (YouTube, etc.), downloading or listening to music, using VoIP calling services, downloading and using apps, and so on.

VoIP/Streaming/Tethering

Using VoIP services (such as Skype and Google Voice), any form of “streaming” (audio or video) or “tethering” your device to a PC and so on is likely to incur very significant cellular data charges.

Applications (Apps)

Note that apps that are advertised as “free” are only free to purchase; they will still incur cellular data charges when they are downloaded. Note also that many apps may automatically use data in the background without your knowledge.

Background Data

Some devices may automatically transmit and receive data without any user action or knowledge. This may result in significant unexpected cellular data charges. Applications such as push email, news and weather updates, location services and many downloadable apps (even free ones) may do this. This list is not at all exhaustive; therefore, to avoid unexpected bills, we recommend that you take great care to disable automatic applications on your device.

If you wish to avoid such charges, it is your responsibility to ensure that your device is correctly configured. We cannot be held responsible for cellular data charges generated by your failure to control your device’s actions.

To avoid the chance of significant data costs we advise that you use a WiFi connection whenever one is available.
